Detection of a Type Iin Supernova in Optical Follow-up Observations of Icecube Neutrino Events

چکیده
The IceCube neutrino observatory pursues a follow-up program selecting interesting neutrino events in realtime and issuing alerts for electromagnetic follow-up observations. In March 2012, the most significant neutrino alert during the first three years of operation was issued by IceCube. In the follow-up observations performed by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), a Type IIn supernova (SN) PTF12csy was found 0.2◦ away from the neutrino alert direction, with an error radius of 0.54◦. It has a redshift of z = 0.0684, corresponding to a luminosity distance of about 300Mpc and the Pan-STARRS1 survey shows that its explosion time was at least 158 days (in host galaxy rest frame) before the neutrino alert, so that a causal connection is unlikely. The a posteriori significance of the chance detection of both the neutrinos and the SN at any epoch is 2.2σ SUPERNOVA DETECTION IN ICECUBE FOLLOW-UP 3 within IceCube’s 2011/12 data acquisition season. Also, a complementary neutrino analysis reveals no longterm signal over the course of one year. Therefore, we consider the SN detection coincidental and the neutrinos uncorrelated to the SN. However, the SN is unusual and interesting by itself: It is luminous and energetic, bearing strong resemblance to the SN IIn 2010jl, and shows signs of interaction of the SN ejecta with a dense circumstellar medium. High-energy neutrino emission is expected in models of diffusive shock acceleration, but at a low, non-detectable level for this specific SN. In this paper, we describe the SN PTF12csy and present both the neutrino and electromagnetic data, as well as their analysis.

Detecting neutrino transients with optical follow-up observations
A novel method is presented which will enhance the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to identify transient sources such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and core-collapse Supernovae (SNe). Triggered by the detection of high energy neutrino events from IceCube or other large scale neutrino telescopes, an optical follow-up program will allow the identification of the transient neutrino source. We show...
متن کاملOptical follow-up of high-energy neutrinos detected by IceCube
Three-quarters of the 1 km neutrino telescope IceCube is currently taking data. Current models predict high-energy neutrino emission from transient objects like supernovae (SNe) and gammaray bursts (GRBs). To increase the sensitivity to such transient objects we have set up an optical followup program that triggers optical observations on multiplets of high-energy muon-neutrinos. We define mult...
متن کاملA Spitzer Survey for Dust in Type Iin Supernovae
The source of the large amounts of dust observed in high redshift galaxies has remained uncertain for nearly 40 years. Despite the success of models in producing dust within supernova explosions, only a handful of supernovae show direct observational evidence for dust condensation, and these examples all yield 2-3 orders of magnitude less dust than predicted by the models. Recent observations s...
متن کاملInvited review article: IceCube: an instrument for neutrino astronomy.
Neutrino astronomy beyond the Sun was first imagined in the late 1950s; by the 1970s, it was realized that kilometer-scale neutrino detectors were required. The first such instrument, IceCube, is near completion and taking data. The IceCube project transforms 1 km(3) of deep and ultratransparent Antarctic ice into a particle detector. A total of 5160 optical sensors is embedded into a gigaton o...
متن کاملHigh Energy Neutrinos and Cosmic-rays from Low-luminosity Gamma-ray Bursts?
The recently discovered gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 060218/SN 2006aj is classified as an X-ray Flash with very long duration driven possibly by a neutron star. Since GRB 060218 is very near ∼ 140 Mpc and very dim, one-year observation by Swift suggests that the rate of GRB 060218-like events might be very high so that such low luminosity GRBs (LL-GRBs) might form a different population from the c...
